MDHearingAid® Supports Hearing Loss Awareness During Better Hearing and Speech Month

Leading affordable hearing aid developer conveys importance of hearing loss protection across all age groups to maintain high quality of life

CHICAGO--()--According to the National Center for Health Statistics, about 17 percent of all Americans have some degree of hearing loss and more than half of those affected are younger than age 65. While hearing loss becomes more common as we grow older, damage from exposure to loud noise is irreversible and can happen to anyone at any age. From daily iPod use, to workplace and city-living noise, hearing loss has become a widespread phenomenon that is interfering with day-to-day communication and overall quality of life across all age groups. May is Better Hearing and Speech Month and on this occasion, MDHearingAid®, the leading developer of effective and affordable hearing aids is seeking to continue to educate and raise awareness of the importance of protecting your hearing, regardless of age.

“Every week, I see the impact hearing loss has on my patient’s day-to-day life,” says Dr. Sreek Cherukuri, founder of MDHearingAid®, and a Board Certified ear, nose and throat doctor. “We take for granted our ability to comprehend directions, respond to warnings and alarms, communicate with our spouse and enjoy conversations with family, friends and colleagues. The connection made through communication is what inspired me to create a line of effective and affordable hearing aids, and provide accessibility to patients that could otherwise not afford them.”

“Since I got my MDHearingAid®, my life has changed dramatically,” says Ed Morweiser, a patient of Dr. Cherukuri. “I can hear the birds chirping, the wind in my ears and the leaves rustling. I am hearing sounds I haven’t heard in years and it has given me a whole new phase of my life back.”

MDHearingAid® offers these tips to help prevent hearing loss at any age:

Children and Teenagers

Start teaching children and teenagers at a young age to care for their hearing, just as they do for their teeth. If you can hear a child’s iPod or DVD player from three feet away, it’s too loud and needs to be turned down.

Adults

Exposure to loud noise in the workplace, recreational environments and at home can contribute to hearing loss. Whether it’s a lawn mower, subway, jack hammer, or even a baby crying, sound above 85 decibels (average traffic noise) is damaging to the ear. When possible, consumers should consider wearing noise reducing ear plugs to help prevent permanent damage.

Seniors

Age-related hearing loss usually begins after age 60 and is a result of the cumulative effects of aging on the ears. Additionally, seniors should look at their prescription and nonprescription medications which can damage the ear and cause hearing loss.

If you or a loved one suspects hearing loss, Dr. Cherukuri urges consumers to see an Otolaryngologist or physician to be examined and counseled on purchasing the best hearing aid you can afford.
