BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today Puget Sound Energy announced that the exhausted yet triumphant Sayers family from Bellingham, Wash., is the winner of the Re-Energized by Design competition. The Sayers family stood victorious after a grueling series of five challenging room makeovers, rising above the competition using their unique take on each project, serious do-it-yourself (DIY) know-how, and all their own muscle power. With the help of their design coach Lauren Zerbey, the Sayers’ outlasted and out-designed five competing families to claim the $5,000 grand prize in the series finale, which aired yesterday on Evening Magazine. The entire series can still be viewed from beginning to end at PSE.com/ReEnergizedByDesign/webisodes.
“Re-Energized by Design pushed our family to the limit,” said Nia Sayers. “The competition brought us closer together. Let me tell you – there is no quit in our house! Through the ups and downs of the weekly challenges, we persevered. Our hard work paid off. Now our house is Re-Energized by Design.”
The Re-Energized by Design competition premiered on March 20, 2013. The idea behind Re-Energized by Design was to encourage PSE customers to combine beautiful home design with energy-efficient products. Each Wednesday, PSE released a new episode of the competition featuring a different room makeover challenge. A trio of local celebrity judges, including society and event photographer Duell Fisher, 425 and South Sound Magazine editor Lisa Patterson and radio personality Marty Riemer, reviewed and scored the contestants’ efforts. At the end of each challenge, one family was eliminated.
“Each family worked their tails off in the competition, but the Sayers family really hit it out of the park,” said Re-Energized by Design judge Duell Fisher. “Week after week, we were holding our breath to see what they would come up with next. The Sayers took every challenge to the next level and wowed us from start to finish.”
Throughout the competition the Sayers family’s energy efficiency improvements led the pack with resourcefulness and creativity. Scott and Nia Sayers built their home themselves, using the movie “Big” as inspiration and brought their quirky eye for style and efficiency to each challenge.
“Anyone can Re-Energize their home and PSE is here to help,” said Dennis Rominger, energy efficiency expert at PSE. “It’s important for people to know that all of the contestants in Re-Energized by Design are not design experts, they are just people like you and me with a vision for a more efficient, more stylish home and the determination to get it done. We hope that our customers find Re-Energized by Design inspiring and see it as a jumping-off point for starting their own energy-efficiency projects that will save them money on their PSE bill, while still looking fantastic.”
Although five families were eliminated throughout the competition, no one walked away empty handed. All contestants received a stipend to spend on each room makeover and energy-efficient lighting from GE. The final three contestants received a high efficiency washer and matching dryer from Frigidaire. The final two families also won a Frigidaire Ultra Efficient Kitchen including a refrigerator, dishwasher, range and microwave. Frigidaire and GE also provided Re-Energized by Design’s $5000 grand prize.
