BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fleetmatics Group PLC (NYSE: FLTX) today revealed that reducing idling time on the nation’s 18.51 million local commercial vehicles could significantly reduce fuel consumption and make an impact on U.S. fuel dependency. Data from Fleetmatics Group’s tracking of more than 331,000 subscriber vehicles reveals that vehicles operating without a fleet management solution will idle for 96 minutes per day, on average. By implementing a GPS fleet tracking solution, SMB fleet owners can reduce vehicle idle time by 25 percent on average2.
Currently only 3.1 million or 17 percent of all local commercial vehicles have implemented a fleet management solution3. *If all local commercial vehicles in the U.S. were to implement this technology, we could save more than $25 million4 daily or more than seven million gallons of gas per day5. Fleetmatics Group produced an Infographic to demonstrate the impact reduced idling can have on our fuel consumption in the U.S.
When translated annually these numbers could make an incredible impact on U.S. fuel dependency and carbon emissions including:
- Reduction in annual gas consumption by 2,584,200,000 gallons4
- Saving more than $17 trillion per year in fuel costs4
- Decreasing carbon emissions by 22,406,996 metric tons per year6

Fleetmatics Helps Customers See the ‘Green’ in Idle Reduction
J. Carey Logging is a family owned and operated business in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The company adopted Fleetmatics to help manage maintenance for its eight vehicles, but was surprised to discover it also had an expensive idling problem.
After one week tracking idling, company owner, Ryan Carey discovered his fleet was idling 25 hours a day. “I could not believe it was that high. But I realized I was a contributor too. Five minutes here and ten minutes there really add up.” Since he began tracking idling, Carey estimates that he has saved $1,200 in fuel per month.
Midwest Underground Technology (MUTI) is a leading telecommunications construction company with 84 vehicles. The company had been using another GPS tracking solution, but switched to Fleetmatics Group’s SageQuest solution and immediately discovered a major idling problem that had gone undetected.
In only seven days, the company’s trucks had idled more than 259 hours and 52 minutes, burning more than 180 gallons of fuel. If that had been allowed to continue, it would have cost MUTI nearly $40,000 in completely wasted fuel for the entire year – the average salary of a full time employee.
“We were absolutely shocked when we saw the numbers, and our company president promptly started enforcing new rules about idling when he saw how much money it was really costing the company,” said Tyler Mott, Materials Manager, MUTI.
