Division of Motor Vehicles Launches New Temporary Tag System for Delaware Car Dealerships

DOVER, Del.--()--The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in partnership with Delaware Interactive have developed a new temporary tag issuing system for new car dealerships. The new program, which officially launches on Friday, March 8, will provide greater efficiencies for automobile dealerships to fulfill DMV requirements governing the sale of motor vehicles and temporary tag issuance.

The DMV has historically enjoyed a close working relationship with the state’s auto dealership community. Over the past few years, the DMV has fielded requests from dealerships for an integrated online system that would replace the current paper-based process, which required dealers to prepay for temporary tags and keep inventory.

DMV Director Jennifer Cohan explained the program, “The DMV is launching the new print on demand temporary tag system to give new car dealers the ability to print temporary tags as needed for customers. The print on demand system adds yet another customer service benefit to DMV’s growing list of online, and onsite efficiencies for all customers. The DMV is also happy to provide this to our Delaware dealers at no cost.”

The web-based temporary tag system will streamline the issuance of temporary vehicle registration at the dealership by allowing dealers to print a “temp-tag” on site and on demand. There will no longer be a need to send paperwork back to the DMV, which helps improve efficiency by reducing manual data entry and decreasing the administrative burden on the DMV and dealership staffs. With approximately 130,000 temporary tags issued annually, this drastically reduces the amount of time taken per tag issued.

Guy Winer, General Manager of Winner Ford Dover, explained that, “The new system will help us out tremendously and improve the integrity of the temporary tag issuing process. It will also be great for consumers because it’s an instant transaction process.”

I.G. Burton BMW of Milford was one of the dealerships that piloted the new system. Burton’s Finance Manager Rick Marine said about the program, “I love it! It speeds up the sales process, is very organized, and we no longer have to search through a lot of paperwork and temporary tag forms. I would never want to go back to the old system.”

A key safety feature of the new temporary tag system provides state law enforcement agencies the ability to identify - in real-time - any vehicle owner authorized to operate on Delaware roadways driving a vehicle with the new temporary tag. This confirmation offers enhanced security for Delaware motorists by reducing the risk of fraud. The temporary tags will also no longer be handwritten, but printed, therefore establishing visual conformity and increasing the legibility of information.
