OLDSMAR, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The United States Navy’s Naval Criminal Investigative Services (NCIS) has selected PlateSmart® Technologies as its exclusive partner for a License Plate Recognition (LPR) system.
The Navy will use PlateSmart® system to secure bases and ports. The system will also be used to help with NCIS investigations.
“We are extremely excited to help NCIS with its investigative needs, as well as securing their facilities and ports,” said John Chigos, PlateSmart® founder and CEO. “PlateSmart® will also help other security and law enforcement agencies in securing our borders and other sites from both domestic and international terrorists.”
The PlateSmart® system can connect to any video camera, old or new. When a vehicle passes in front of the camera, the system takes a picture of the license plate. The PlateSmart® software immediately verifies the plate numbers and the state the plate is from. That information is then run against a database, such as a criminal watch list. If a match is found, an alert is sounded in less than a second.
The PlateSmart® system can also be used during criminal investigations, helping law enforcement agencies locate and identify stolen vehicles, pre-amber alert children. It is estimated that of 70 percent of all crimes involve a license plate.
PlateSmart® is extremely accurate and can run as a stand-alone program or can easily be integrated into existing systems. PlateSmart® is being used by law enforcement, universities and at large events like the Republican National Convention in Tampa. Seaports, airports, hospitals and other private businesses are considering PlateSmart® to secure their locations.
Exact details of how NCIS will use the PlateSmart® system will not be released. However, when announcing the exclusive partnership with PlateSmart®, the US Navy wrote, “PlateSmart® is the only known source in the area that has the required capability of providing PlateSmart® Enterprise and Mobile Software for License Plate Recognition (LPR) system.”
PlateSmart® is manufactured exclusively by Cyclops Technologies, Inc., a privately owned company located in Oldsmar, Florida that was incorporated in 2004. PlateSmart® is the world’s first software-only License Plate Recognition solution. The company’s staff consists of mathematicians, video engineers, attorneys, software developers, IT specialists, and former law enforcement personnel.
