MINNEAPOLIS--()--When it comes to pies the results of a new survey from the makers of Mrs. Smith’s® and Edwards® desserts reveals it’s all about the flavor.

Just in time for National Pie Day (Jan. 23), the vote is in. Americans say that traditional takes the cake – er, pie – with apple pie ranking first (27 percent), followed by chocolate and pecan (both 14 percent), pumpkin (12 percent) and Key lime (10 percent). As for toppings, 38 percent prefer their pies “naked,” versus 37 percent for whipped cream. A quarter of respondents say they like to keep it cool with á la mode slices. The survey was conducted among 1,000 adults the week of Jan. 2, 2013.

The survey also showed that some consumers would rather fake it than bake it. With busy schedules and entertaining family, results also show that 17 percent of all respondents have tried, at least once, to serve a store-bought pie as delicious homemade.

“As leaders in desserts, we pride ourselves on pies that taste like homemade and offer a variety of delicious flavors,” said Susan Allen, Senior Director, Brand Marketing at Schwan's Consumer Brands, Inc. “As pies continue to be an important in-home dessert for consumers to entertain and share with family, it’s our goal to deliver the highest quality, flavorful taste options that are convenient for families to enjoy together at the table!”

When it comes to their “pie-eating personality,” most consumers are “humble pie,” leaning toward a one– slim–slice–serving (35 percent), making an Edwards® Frozen Dessert Singles a perfect option, while 25 percent are “s’more pie” – one piece is never enough. The “sweetie pies” (24 percent) like their slices loaded with toppings such as candy pieces or whipped cream, while 16 percent describe themselves as “midnight pie,” sneaking a slice as a late-night snack.
