NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) CEO, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, issued the following statement Tuesday regarding comments by the International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s Middle Eastern Chief Masood Ahmed, who said that the IMF will send a team to Iran in 2013 for regular consultations regarding its crashing currency:
The UN and IMF should not undermine the will of the international community and the effects of sanctions imposed in direct response to the Iranian regime's illegal activities, particularly when Iran has been repeatedly condemned by the UN Security Council and IAEA for its illegal nuclear program.
The IMF's proposed work in Iran is designed to counter the effects of both the gross mismanagement of the Iranian economy by the illicit regime, and the consequences of international sanctions.
The IMF's actions are more appropriate for a member state in good standing, not an illegal regime subject to multiple UN Security Council sanctions. The IMF is directly counteracting the effects, and therefore the consequences, of international sanctions. The IMF's cooperation with Iran must end.
UANI launched its launched its IMF campaign in May, calling on the IMF to either close the accounts it holds with Iran’s sanctioned Central Bank, Bank Markazi, or suspend Iran’s membership in the IMF. UANI’s campaign was covered by The New York Times, Bloomberg, and AFP.
