The Red Guide to Recovery Provides Free Disaster Recovery Mobile App for Hurricane Sandy Victims

SAN DIEGO--()--In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Sean Scott, the San Diego based author of The Red Guide to Recovery - Resource Handbook for Disaster Survivors, has announced he is providing a free hurricane recovery app for those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Now available, the app is designed to help disaster survivors navigate through the recovery process while raising awareness of the many pitfalls that present themselves in post-disaster scenarios. The app contains a complete electronic version of The Red Guide to Recovery, along with helpful videos, RSS news feeds, a state-by-state phone directory, and other features.

As a companion to the app, Scott is also providing the “Personal Property Memory Jogger” -- a free disaster preparedness and recovery tool designed to help individuals and families prepare an inventory of their personal property. The Memory Jogger is designed to help families determine the amount of replacement value of personal property in the event of a loss. The tool is a pre-populated Excel spreadsheet with over 5000 household items, broken down into a room-by-room format. Once downloaded, the user has the option to delete items that may not apply and/or add items that may not appear on the list.

“Watching the havoc that Hurricane Sandy has been wreaking on the East Coast, it was clear we needed to do something to help these people and provide them with the tools we have to help them recover,” said Scott. “After a disaster, one of the most daunting tasks for a homeowner or renter is to provide an inventory to their insurance adjuster of all the personal belongings that were damaged or destroyed in order to be compensated for the items that were lost. Imagine trying to recall every item you had in your home and creating an inventory from scratch, when you have no photos, receipts, or documentation.”

The Memory Jogger is available as a free download at http://www.theredguidetorecovery.com/recovery-tools/personal-property-memory-jogger/.

The Red Guide to Recovery's free tools and resources compile Scott’s 30-plus years of construction and restoration experience coupled with exhaustive research on available resources and information from relief organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, Government agencies such as FEMA and the SBA and fire department safety and emergency management experts.

Scott encourages fire departments and emergency management agencies to provide their communities with a link to the Red Guide website so people stricken by disasters will have easy access to the many free disaster recovery resources they will need.
