TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Laser Spine Institute, the leader in minimally invasive spine surgery, today announced it has launched two new surgical procedures aimed at bridging the treatment gap with integrative solutions to better meet the medical needs of patients. RegenaDISC® and Minimally Invasive Stabilization (MIS) are performed at the Laser Spine Institute’s AAAHC accredited Ambulatory Surgical Centers, offering patients an alternative to complicated and sometimes risky open-back surgeries.
RegenaDISC
Pioneered by Laser Spine Institute surgeon and Chief of Surgical Innovation Dr. Mark Flood, RegenaDISC® combines the most advanced minimally invasive spine surgery techniques with the healing of stem cell treatment.
“I am thrilled to bring a new treatment option to patients who are suffering from back pain and are looking for an alternative to open back surgery or fusion,” said Dr. Mark Flood, Chief of Surgical Innovation at Laser Spine Institute. “RegenaDISC® and Minimally Invasive Stabilization will allow us to treat a greater number of patients with a minimally invasive procedure performed in an outpatient setting.”
RegenaDISC® is an innovative spinal disc regeneration procedure that uses stem cell tissue transplantation to treat the root causes of back pain. With RegenaDISC®, Laser Spine Institute surgeons can repair the root causes of painful disc problems while promoting regeneration and healing using the patient’s own stem cells. The procedure, performed at the Laser Spine Institute in Scottsdale, AZ, involves extracting adult stem cells from the patient and transferring them to the affected discs to facilitate pain reduction and tissue regeneration. As a result, there is minimal risk to the patient due to the use of their own stem cells.
Years in development, RegenaDISC® also uses a low-level laser to stimulate the cells and encourage regeneration. The procedure combines the latest advances in multiple disciplines, and offers a comprehensive treatment for common spinal conditions for patients who have not responded to conservative treatments and who want to avoid spine fusion or other invasive procedures.
Minimally Invasive Stabilization
As an alternative to traditional open spinal fusion, Laser Spine Institute has also launched MIS, which is an outpatient procedure including cervical and lumbar minimally invasive spine fusion procedures. Minimally Invasive Stabilization is a muscle-sparing procedure designed to treat a range of severe spine issues, including spinal stenosis and instability, myelomalacia (swelling of the spine), and unstable spine.
MIS is performed on patients in need of either neck or back stabilization and brings many benefits compared to traditional open spinal fusion, including minimal incisions and quicker recovery times.
Until now, Laser Spine Institute would refer patients in need of a fusion to other practices, often time resulting in traditional, open-spine surgery for the patient performed in a hospital with a long postoperative recovery. Laser Spine Institute will perform all MIS procedures at its flagship Tampa facility with plans to expand to additional facilities in the future, including Scottsdale, AZ and Oklahoma City, OK. Outpatient procedures allow for less risk of complication and infection, resulting in a less than one-percent infection rate compared to the national infection rate of 4.5 percent at hospitals.
“At Laser Spine Institute, we pride ourselves in providing expanded healthcare options for patients suffering from neck and back pain and have developed a number of technologically advanced, minimally invasive spine procedures as a result,” said Bill Horne, CEO of Laser Spine Institute. “RegenaDISC® and Minimally Invasive Stabilization are the latest of these procedures and we are looking forward to bringing these industry leading techniques to people in need.”
Laser Spine Institute helps patients every day achieve a better quality of life by delivering neck and back pain solutions. Laser Spine Institute surgeons are trained through a Laser Spine Institute fellowship and together they perform more minimally invasive spine surgeries each month than any other spine surgery center in the nation.
