SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ted Griggs has been promoted to president of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. He has been with the network since 1998, first serving as vice president of production and operations, and since 2007 as vice president and general manager. Griggs’ promotion is effective immediately, and was announced today by Jon Litner, Group President of NBC Sports Group.
Litner said, “Ted is a talented and creative television executive with an unbridled passion for Bay Area sports. Under his leadership, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, in concert with Comcast SportsNet California, has quickly become the leader for regional sports programming in Northern California.”
Griggs added, “I’m honored to work with the most talented people in sports television who present viewers with the highest quality sports coverage in the region on a daily basis. I’d like to thank Jon for this recognition and I look forward to continuing the network's efforts to provide comprehensive, entertaining and insightful programming to Northern California sports fans.”
Under Griggs’ leadership, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, together with its sister network Comcast SportsNet California, has established itself as Northern California’s leading source for live game coverage and comprehensive on-air and online local sports news, debate and analysis. In 2007, Griggs oversaw the network's relocation and construction of its state-of-the-art 37,000 square-foot HD studios, newsroom and office space in downtown San Francisco. That same year, Comcast SportsNet increased its live events production by 30% and now televises over 550 live sporting events annually – featuring MLB’s San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics, NBA’s Golden State Warriors, NHL’s San Jose Sharks, MLS's San Jose Earthquakes and AFL’s San Jose SaberCats – and over 2,200 live studio shows each year.
In 2008, Griggs was ranked first in the San Jose Mercury News’ “Bay Area’s 25 Most Powerful Sports People” and has remained in the top five on the annual list. He was the executive producer for the 2010 “Out. The Glenn Burke Story,” about the first openly gay MLB player, which earned critical acclaim, including nominations for Outstanding Documentary at the annual national GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards and at the Northern California Area Emmy Awards. Also, in 2011, the sports news division began producing live daily sports news segments for NBC Bay Area’s 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts, while CSNBayArea.com/CSNCalifornia.com grew more than 100% in visits and page views.
Griggs has also guided Comcast SportsNet’s community relations efforts, which include the All-Star Teacher Award and Comcast Cares Day; programming and promotional support for the Special Olympics of Northern California and the Make-A-Wish Foundation Greater Bay Area Chapter; and fundraising support for the Willie Mays Boys and Girls Club at Hunters Point.
A native of Hayward, California and a graduate of Moreau Catholic High School and San Francisco State University, Griggs resides in Novato, California with his wife Amy and has three children, Jace, Griffin and Sydney. He is a past president of the Novato Lacrosse Club, a youth non-profit that provides opportunities for boys and girls ages 7-14 to play lacrosse and to learn life lessons through positive coaching.
