Executive Summary:
Regarding the sector's capacity, the annual growth in the number of general hospitals eased significantly from 22% in 2009 to just 5.4% in 2010, while the number of hospital beds dropped by 0.8% on the year to 180,548 as of end-2010, according to data from the Polish statistics office. The rate of increase in outpatient healthcare units also slowed more than three times in 2010, with private facilities boosting their share of the total to 83.5%.
Poland's total spending on health accounted for 7.5% of the country's economic output in 2010, slightly up from 7.4% in 2009 and broadly in line with that of its CEE peers - Hungary and the Czech Republic with 7.3% and 7.9%, respectively. Public funds account for 72.6% of Poland's total health spending, as the share of the private sector has been steadily decreasing since 1997. Health expenditure per capita in Poland stood at USD 829 in 2009, the lowest among the so-called Vesegrad countries, according to data from the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The value of the Polish private health care market grew by 4% y/y to PLN 28.8bn (EUR 6.4bn) in 2010 and is forecast to expand at an average annual rate of 6% by 2013. The sector's growth in 2010 halved from 8% in 2009 mainly due to the adverse developments arising from the economic crisis. The Polish private healthcare market is forecast to reach a value of PLN 34.3bn in 2013, supported again by double-digit growth in medical subscription and the health insurance segments. Despite the fact that private health insurance is one of the fastest growing segments, a more dynamic growth is impeded by the lack of legislation in place.
