NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--New York-based law firm Morris & McVeigh LLP is proud to announce the 150th anniversary of its founding. Established in 1862 by Henry Lewis Morris, a direct descendent of Declaration of Independence signatory Lewis Morris, Morris & McVeigh is one of the oldest continually practicing law firms in New York City. With offices in Manhattan and Albany, Morris & McVeigh is considered one of the top New York firms in the field of trust and estate administration.
“The recent collapse of major large law firms stands in stark contrast to a firm like ours, which has never strayed far from its roots,” said Richard J. Miller, Jr., the Managing Partner of the firm, who has been included in The Best Lawyers in America since 2010. “Morris & McVeigh has a long history and tradition serving New York, and we’ve endured because of our partners’ collective expertise, discretion, and longstanding client relationships. We are grateful for our many decades of loyal client partnerships and look forward to many more.”
At the time of its founding in 1862, the firm was primarily engaged in managing the real estate interests of the Morris family, which owned large portions of Morrisania, now the South Bronx. It also represented members of prominent families, including the Stuyvesant, Chanler, Chapman, and Russell families. The present firm of Morris & McVeigh was formed in 1918 by Lewis Spencer Morris, the son of Henry Lewis Morris, and Charles S. McVeigh. Morris & McVeigh gradually enlarged its practice, primarily in the trust and estate field, while also accumulating substantial experience in corporate matters.
Under the stewardship of former Managing Partner Guy Rutherfurd, the firm moved from the financial district to midtown in the mid-1960s, leading the way for other law firms to follow suit. Rutherfurd, who died in early June at the age of ninety-six, was a direct descendant of the Morris and Stuyvesant families and practiced with the firm for over fifty years. He was the last remaining link to Morris & McVeigh’s early years.
The firm has recently added several new lawyers to its ranks and remains committed to providing the best possible advice and service to its clients.
