Catholic Health Initiatives Selects Orion Health as Health Information Exchange Technology Partner in its Enterprise-Wide $1.5B Electronic Patient Record Initiative

More than 100 Facilities in 19 States to use Orion Health HIE for Catholic Health Initiatives’ OneCare Universal Health Record

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--()--Orion Health, the leader in health information exchange (HIE) and healthcare integration solutions, today announced that Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI), the nation’s second-largest Catholic healthcare system, has chosen Orion Health HIE to enable physicians and clinicians to access and exchange patient information, coordinate patient care and update patient records throughout its 100 facilities in 19 different states. CHI, made up of 76 hospitals, 40 long-term and assisted care facilities, two community health-services organizations, two accredited nursing colleges and various home health agencies, will use Orion Health HIE as the cornerstone of its $1.5B OneCare program to create a shared, universal health record for patients served in over 400,000 hospital admissions and nearly five million physician office visits annually across the CHI health system.

Orion Health HIE, which is powered by Orion Health Rhapsody Integration Engine and also includes Orion Health Clinical Data Repository and Clinical Portal, will be CHI’s enterprise-wide health information exchange. The private HIE will give clinicians affiliated with the CHI health system a holistic view of a patient’s medical information, regardless of where the clinician is located or patient care was provided. The HIE will offer access to up-to-date and complete patient information and will enable clinicians to securely share patient information across all facilities in CHI’s extensive care network, improving continuity of care and helping clinicians to make the best care decisions. CHI will also leverage Orion Health HIE to connect to several state HIEs in its service area and the U.S. government’s Nationwide Health Information Network (NwHIN), which aims to create a countrywide connected care network of the nation’s healthcare facilities and organizations. CHI expects to complete the implementation of Orion Health HIE in all 76 hospitals and affiliated facilities by June 2015.

“Catholic Health Initiatives’ work with Orion Health HIE is a significant piece of our OneCare program, which will create a unified patient record for each patient in our health system,” said Kathleen Sanford, RN, DBA, CENP, FACHE, senior vice president and chief nursing officer, Catholic Health Initiatives. “The CHI HIE will give our clinicians access to complete patient records, which will benefit Catholic Health Initiatives’ patients in a noticeable way through streamlined care processes, better-informed diagnoses and improved coordination of care.”

CHI selected Orion Health because of its proven track record in implementing HIEs for large healthcare organizations spanning multiple geographical regions, its rapid deployment schedule, ability to integrate with the software systems already in use across CHI’s facilities, and the high physician adoption and utilization that Orion Health’s clinical solutions have shown.

“Catholic Health Initiatives is forward-thinking in its vision for using technology to empower its physicians to deliver better patient care. Its OneCare initiative is the cornerstone of this vision, and Orion Health is proud to be a foundational element,” said Paul Viskovich, president, Orion Health North America. “Orion Health believes that it is not only our powerful software capabilities but also our global experience deploying large-scale HIEs that can support CHI in addressing challenges commonly faced by healthcare organizations as they undertake to roll out massive, IT-led and clinically-driven projects that impact the entire organization and its patient community.”

“As an integral part of Catholic Health Initiatives’ OneCare program, Orion Health HIE will provide access to the accurate and actionable patient information that is critical to effectively diagnose and treat patients, regardless of whether they present in the ER with acute needs or require continuous care as a result of a chronic condition,” said Stephen Moore, MD, senior vice president and chief medical officer, Catholic Health Initiatives. “Orion Health HIE will support physicians with the latest patient data – where and when they need it – so they can make the best care decisions and provide their patients the best care delivery experience possible.”
