OTTAWA, Ontario--()--BIOTECanada is pleased to announce Amgen Canada as the winner of the 2012 Gold Leaf Award in recognition of the company’s contributions to Canadian communities. The Contribution to Canadian Communities - Company of the Year award was created to acknowledge the contributions made by biotechnology companies to Canadian communities.

Their passion and expertise shines through. People in a variety of communities are benefiting from the company’s efforts.”

Supporting health and wellness in communities across the country is of utmost importance to Amgen. Through its Holding Hands™ - Bringing families closer to wellness™ initiative, Amgen contributes to a variety of programs that provide local families in need with information, education and support to help them achieve wellness as they navigate a complex healthcare system. For instance, Amgen sponsors a diversity support worker initiative at Credit Valley Hospital, which serves a diverse community of immigrants, and newcomers who speak more than 56 different languages. Through Amgen’s support, the hospital can provide a variety of different services to help its patients navigate the entire continuum of care.

Amgen Canada is also committed to raising the value of science literacy among young Canadians. To this end, the company offers The Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence (AASTE) to teachers at the K-12 level who significantly impact their students through exemplary science teaching and who achieve demonstrated results in student learning in communities across Canada.

“We are honoured to receive this award,” said Anand Varadan, vice president and general manager of Amgen Canada. “Supporting our local communities in meaningful ways is very rewarding for our company and employees.”
