World’s Brightest Young Scientists Travel to Pittsburgh

WHAT:  

The world’s largest high school science research competition, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2012, a program of Society for Science & the Public, comes to Pittsburgh, Pa. May 13-18. More than 1,500 high school students selected from 446 affiliate fairs in approximately 70 countries, regions and territories will share ideas, showcase cutting-edge research and inventions, and compete for more than $3 million in awards.

 
WHEN:

Opening Ceremony

Monday, May 14 from 7-8:30 p.m. ET

Celebrating the achievements of the young scientists participating in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, Benjamin Gulak, founder and CEO of BPG motors and three-time Intel International Science and Engineering Fair finalist, will keynote while Brian David Johnson, futurist at Intel Corporation, will also provide comment.

Public Day

Thursday, May 17 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. ET

This is the best opportunity for media to see, interview, film and photograph a broad range of students from across the country and the world. This year, research projects include such topics as earthquake detection, oil spill cleanup, self-navigating robots, energy-generating hiking boots and alternative chemotherapy treatments.

 

Awards Ceremony

Friday, May 18 from 9 a.m.-noon ET

Registered media are invited to attend the awards ceremony where the winners will be announced. The top prizes awarded by the Intel Foundation include the $75,000 Gordon E. Moore Award, named for the Intel co-founder and retired chairman and CEO. Two additional top winning projects will receive Intel Foundation Young Scientist Awards of $50,000 each.
