LivingSocial’s Escapes Has Put One Million Heads in Beds at Hotels Around the World

Unique, Hand-Crafted Travel Packages Allow LivingSocial Members to Explore and Discover New Places

WASHINGTON--()--Less than 17 months after its launch in November 2010, LivingSocial today announced that its members in North America have booked one million room nights through Escapes at more than 1,400 different hotel, lodging and tour partners around the world. From exotic African safaris and all-inclusive tropical beach vacations to packages at boutique city-market hotels or quiet B&B retreats, LivingSocial’s Escapes provide distinctive travel experiences that allow members to explore, experience and discover new places around the world.

After selling its first half million room nights in its first eleven months, the rate of members booking Escapes has more than doubled with the next 500,000 room nights booked in a mere five months. On a monthly basis, the company has sold an average of 62,500 room nights and approximately 2,100 per day.

“We are incredibly proud to reach such a momentous milestone, and it cements LivingSocial’s place in the travel industry as a leading provider of unique vacation experiences,” said Dave Madden, general manager, LivingSocial’s Escapes, North America. “Seventy percent of Escapes purchasers were not actively looking to book travel when they bought one of our packages, so we are creating demand and bringing new guests to our hotel partners that wouldn’t have booked with them otherwise. Over the past few years, there has been a great shift in how travel is booked, and we look forward to continuing to grow and evolve as a leader in marrying social commerce with the travel industry.”

The pace at which LivingSocial’s Escapes has achieved this milestone is unprecedented. Other companies who have reached their own one-millionth milestone include:

  • After opening its first restaurant in 1950, it took McDonalds until 1955 to serve 1 million hamburgers;
  • The Toyota Prius celebrated 1 million hybrid cars sold in the U.S. 11 years after the first one was purchased; and,
  • Rhapsody, the online music streaming service, reached the 1 million subscribers milestone in 10 years.
