MD Anderson Selects Health Language to Standardize Complex Data for Enhanced Patient Care

Cancer Center Adopts HLI’s Language Engine® to Enable Data Interoperability Throughout Its Organization and Facilitate Evidence-Based Research

DENVER--()--Health Language, Inc. (HLI), the global leader in healthcare terminology management, today announced that The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has selected its Language Engine (LE) to automate the mapping of patient data collected in ClinicStation, MD Anderson’s custom-built electronic medical record (EMR) that integrates clinical and research data. The adoption of LE supports MD Anderson’s long-term goals of incorporating natural language processing in its EMR and achieving data interoperability within and outside the enterprise.

“Because we specialize in cancer care, our terminology challenges can be much more fine-grained than those found in other health environments,” said Dr. Lynn Vogel, chief information officer and vice president at MD Anderson. “The advanced standardization capabilities of the Language Engine enable us to face these challenges head-on as we position ourselves toward discovering better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.”

MD Anderson partnered with HLI because of its expertise in healthcare terminology and strong offering of commercially-supported terminology management tools. As a result of this partnership, MD Anderson is able to:

  • Leverage a standard terminology for data exchange between internal clinical and research systems;
  • Simplify the data reporting process with standards organizations such as the National Cancer Institute (NCI); and
  • Promote interoperability between organizations across the enterprise for collaborative care and treatment.

The terms of this agreement also provide MD Anderson with access to HLI’s LExScape mapping tool, Web services and a range of standard terminology codes. Through these services, the cancer center is able to map all of their local codes to a variety of standards across the industry.

“At Health Language, we admire the advanced research and clinical capabilities of MD Anderson, and we are pleased that the Language Engine now plays an important role in the further development of ClinicStation,” said George Schwend, CEO and president of HLI. “MD Anderson understands how to prepare for the future of cancer medicine, and we look forward to working closely with them.”
