Kantar Retail: New Book Advises Walmart to Be Urban Pioneer and King of E-Commerce to Beat Amazon

LONDON--()--A new book, released on 3 April 2012, co-authored by Kantar Retail specialist Bryan Roberts, offers key insights into what the world’s largest retailer Walmart will look like in 2020 and the competition it faces.

Walmart celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, but despite its success Roberts advises the global retail giant to get smarter at e-commerce and become an urban pioneer to remain competitive against the likes of Amazon.

Roberts has over 15 years’ industry experience in retail consulting and highlights in the book the major shopper trends that are emerging globally and warns retailers about the risks of delaying action.

Chapters in the book called Walmart: Key Insights and Practical Lessons from the World’s Largest Retailer include:

-- Why Walmart should move towards small box stores and become an urban pioneer as shoppers move away from the superstore format.

-- How Walmart, and other retailers, need to get smarter at e-commerce now that Amazon is Walmart’s major competitor – not Tesco or Carrefour.

-- Insight for retailers and suppliers on the impact of Walmart’s expansion plans into more European markets.

Bryan Roberts, Director of Retail Research at Kantar Retail, said:“Kantar Retail spends a lot of time speaking to suppliers and Walmart is easily the biggest customer for many of these suppliers. Walmart touches 200 million shoppers every week and so the impact it has on retailers, suppliers and consumers is immense.”

“This book is very timely as it’s Walmart’s 50th anniversary this year and while it has made some mistakes along the way, its global expansion has to be admired. The challenge now is how the retail giant will maintain its position in this competitive marketplace and compete in a different shopping environment – both in smaller stores and online.”

Kantar Retail is a global insight and consultancy business and works closely with global retailers to give robust data-driven insight that looks across markets, shopper and customer trends.

Walmart: Key insights and practical lessons from the world’s largest retailer is published by Kogan Page, RRP £29.99 and is released on 3 April 2012. It is currently available to pre-order from Amazon.
