Teaching Biological Evolution Practically, Educationally, and Soundly

ARLINGTON, Va.--()--EVO: Ten Questions Everyone Should Ask About Evolution, a DVD by filmmaker John Feldman, and an accompanying NSTA EVO Teachers Guide, written by Rodger W. Bybee, provide high school science teachers with authoritative classroom resources to help teach biological evolution. Interviews with some of the world’s best known biologists at the World Summit on Evolution in the Galapagos Islands comprise the film, offering students and other viewers profound and philosophical ideas of science as it relates to the natural world. Among the questions explored are:

  • What is evolution?
  • Who was Charles Darwin?
  • What is natural selection?
  • How do species come about?
  • Why should anyone care about evolution?

The video footage provides powerful examples of the ideas and processes described by the biologists, and can be used in combination with the EVO Teachers Guide which supplements the film’s concepts with background information, preparation for instruction, lessons that include investigations, readings, classroom presentations, and finally, expected learning outcomes and evaluation. Teachers tackling this topic required in the Next Generation Science Standards will be able to bring students to a deeper awareness of the interdependence of all organisms as they embark on this visual and insightful journey.

As author Rodger Bybee notes in the preface, “The opportunity to see and hear renowned scientists discussing evolution while on the Galapagos Islands is something that will engage the student and enhance their understanding of one of the most influential theories in science.”
