NSTA’s Connecting With Nature: A Naturalist’s Perspective Engages Students of All Ages

ARLINGTON, Va.--()--Connecting With Nature: A Naturalist’s Perspective is the irresistible story of how one child fell in love with nature —and how today’s students can, too. Author Robert C. Stebbins takes what he calls “a nature-centered world view” and advocates for an objective yet compassionate role on social and environmental issues. Thought provoking and charming, Connecting With Nature offers advice on performing accurate observations and field reports and understanding natural selection, along with an array of activities to capture the attention of students of all ages—from imitating animal sounds, to tracking animals, to creating a school garden, to photographing birds.

A wide range of topics are covered for K–12 teachers to share with students including fostering ecological literacy, environmental concerns, and nature bonding. The author provides recommendations for establishing a well-rounded, nature-centered educational program, enabling educators to help students learn about nature firsthand and come to better understand how natural ecosystems work, regardless of their size.

In part, the book is a treatise about the future of nature and humans’ role in it, as we are both protectors and members of the natural world. It’s also a personal story of how Stebbins developed a passion for nature that made him want to preserve it for future generations. By example, he shows teachers how to instill a similar love in their students—and rekindle it in themselves.
