The House by the Side of the Road The Selma Civil Rights Movement: Book Provides Personal Memoirs of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and World Events That Surrounded the 1965 Voting Rights Campaign in Selma, Alabama

SELMA, Ala.--()--Author Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson’s book The House by the Side of the Road The Selma Civil Rights Movement is a personal narrative of experiences which took place in her Selma, Alabama home surrounding the Selma Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other famous world leaders made her home their official headquarters while planning the Selma to Montgomery march in 1965. The march led President Lyndon B. Johnson to pass the historic 1965 Voting Rights Act which contained landmark voting rights legislation that allowed previously disenfranchised persons the right to vote in America.

The author takes the reader through her life’s journey growing up in the south during the 1930’s leading up to how she and her late husband Dr. Sullivan Jackson befriended Dr. King and became ardent supporters of the Civil Rights Movement. The book also reflects on this country’s racial divide and America’s continuous struggles for social and economic equality. Nearly 50 years after the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act the author presents a timely message on the importance of voting rights to a democratic society and the current challenges this country faces as it relates to citizens not being allowed to vote.

The House by the Side of the Road The Selma Civil Rights Movement, offers never before told stories of an important part of American history. The author’s up close and personal account of this piece of American history is indeed a fascinating and unique look at the civil rights movement. The reader will also learn what a powerful force a peaceful nonviolent movement can have on the global world and the role women played in the American civil rights campaign.
