ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--BASIS International Ltd. today filed a motion for a preliminary injunction against Research in Motion (RIM) to stop using BASIS’ incontestable federally registered trademark BBX® during the pendency of their trademark infringement action against RIM.
“BASIS built the BBX brand over the course of a quarter of a century to become synonymous with the term ‘operating system independent’. RIM’s unilateral seizure of that brand to use as a name for their new BlackBerry operating system is destroying that association. It’s absurd to suggest that they are not in our line of business. We provide application development tools for the enterprise, and for desktop and mobile solutions, while RIM is touting their new BBX operating system to application software developers around the world as the linchpin to their strategy for their tablet and smartphone products,” says BASIS CEO and Chairman, Nico Spence.
BASIS’ unique approach of being able to deliver client-side applications in either (a) Java for the desktop, or (b) HTML5 and Javascript for the smartphone, tablet, or desktop browser, both from the exact same code base, has had traction with their existing clients. Dr. Kevin W. King, BASIS President and CIO, adds, “We believe that this cross-platform technology opens the doors for a host of new developers to want to develop in our technology. They can learn one language and one set of development tools, and develop for the enterprise or mobile marketplace, except that they won’t give us a second glance if they think BBX is a BlackBerry-only product.”
