ARLINGTON, Va.--()--Today is America Recycles Day, and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® urges consumers to dispose properly of end-of-life electronics through its recycling locator at www.GreenerGadgets.org.

“We strongly support raising Americans’ knowledge of how and where to recycle electronics,” said Walter Alcorn, vice president of environmental affairs and industry sustainability, CEA. “While our research has found that 58 percent of consumers know where to take their end-of-life of electronics, we would very much like to see that level of awareness increase.”

America Recycles Day, a national initiative of nonprofit Keep America Beautiful Inc., is a large scale effort to recycle all sorts of products, and it features thousands of recycling drives nationwide. For more information please go to americarecyclesday.org.

Consumer electronics manufacturers and retailers sponsor or operate more than 5,000 recycling locations nationwide and have vowed to recycled one billion pounds annually by 2016, a sharp increase from 300 million pounds recycled in 2010.

The electronics recycling locator tool on GreenerGadgets.org enables consumers to enter their zip codes to see nearby drop-off locations. This list only includes manufacturer and retailer programs that use the strictest standards and third-party certified recycling locations, to provide consumers assurance that their products will be recycled safely and responsibly.

The eCycling Leadership Initiative, an industry-led effort coordinated by CEA, set the goals of improving eCycling infrastructure, recycling one billion pounds annually and shoring up consumer awareness of eCycling opportunities.
