Shanghai Spark Industrial Park rated BB by China Knowledge. The industrial park, set up in 1984, covers an area of 7.2 sq km. One of the oldest industrial parks in Shanghai, the park is an export-oriented industrial development zone. In 1984, it was approved as a municipal-level development zone by the Shanghai municipal government.
Shanghai Spark IP is situated in Pudong New Area in a southern suburb of Shanghai on the northern shore of Hangzhou Bay. Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport are located 52 km and 50 km away from the zone, respectively.
The main industries in Shanghai Spark IP are fine chemicals, chemical fibers and construction materials. The park also encourages investment in pulp and paper manufacturing, new materials and biopharmaceutical industries.
Large international and domestic companies, including Kohler, Seves, China Bluestar, Oriental Petrochemical, AWA Paper and Shanghai Dongfeng Auto Fastener, have set up units in the zone. China Bluestar Group, one of the country's leading chemical producers, invested over RMB 1.2 billion to build a formaldehyde plant in the park in 1998. The annual production capacity of the plant is 40,000 tons. The group aims to increase its annual production capacity to 200,000 tons by 2012.
U.S.-based Kohler, a top home and bathroom appliance maker, set up a unit with a registered capital of US$18 million. It invested US$45 million in this unit for the manufacture of bathroom appliances. In 2010, 3 new foreign-funded projects had been launched in the zone, and the contracted FDI reached US$18 million.
Industrial parks rated BB are considered attractive at a below-average level. Industrial parks with this rating are typically either in the development stage or are lacking certain important elements. There are 50 with BB rating among 254 national and municipal level industrial parks.
