WALTHAM, Mass. & MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Battery Ventures, a multi-stage investment firm focused on technology and innovation worldwide, congratulates Andrew Mason and Jesse Robbins for their inclusion on Technology Review’s 2011 List of 35 Innovators Under 35 – the TR35. Mason is the CEO and Founder of Groupon, Robbins is Co-Founder and Chief Community Officer of Opscode; both Groupon and Opscode are Battery portfolio companies.
The TR35 honors innovators around the world who are opening up new possibilities in technology. Each year, the Technology Review editorial staff, in conjunction with a panel of expert judges, seeks to recognize individuals under 35 who are tackling important problems in transformative ways, whether it’s developing an entirely new technology or using existing technologies in novel ways. The TR35 class of 2011 (an elite group selected from more 300 nominations), are shaping the future of medicine, computing, communications, electronics, nanotechnology, and more.
“Each year, the process of discovering and selecting the TR35 provides us with an exciting glimpse into the transformative power of technology,” said Jason Pontin, editor in chief and publisher of Technology Review. “The 2011 TR35 is approaching old problems with new technologies that will revolutionize society and business. We are proud to honor them for their work and potential.”
Mason has been named to the TR35 class of 2011 for founding and launching Groupon, which he created by repurposing technology he’d developed in 2007 to help groups of people pledge to perform some civic action as long as a critical mass of users agreed to take part. Today, Groupon provides consumers with discount offers for goods and services in their cities, while at the same time presents a cost-effective way for small brick-and-mortar businesses to advertise to local customers. Robbins is being honored for his continued leadership in the Web Operations and DevOps community, for founding Opscode, and for the creation of the Velocity Web Performance and Operations Conference. Opscode was founded in 2008 and provides world class infrastructure automation for servers, datacenters, desktops, and the cloud.
Mason and Robbins will join other TR35 honorees in discussing their achievements at the Emtech MIT 2011 conference, Oct. 18-19 at the MIT Media Lab in Cambridge, Mass. All of the TR35 winners for 2011 are also featured in the September/October issue of Technology Review and online at www.technologyreview.com/tr35/.
