Business Roundtable Chairman McNerney Calls on Congress to Move Quickly to Approve Trade Agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea

WASHINGTON--()--Business Roundtable (BRT) Chairman Jim McNerney, Chairman, President & CEO of The Boeing Company, urged House and Senate leaders to move forward quickly to approve implementing legislation for the three free trade agreements sent to Congress yesterday.

“America helped create the current system of international trade,” stated McNerney. “These agreements with Colombia, Panama and Korea add to that system in positive ways for America. I urge the House and Senate to act immediately to approve implementing legislation.”

“Each one of these agreements offers significant benefits to the United States – opening markets for U.S. manufacturing, agriculture and services. Together, they will help create up to 250,000 U.S. jobs. Every additional day of delay is costing our economy, as competitor nations receive preferential treatment in markets that could be served by more U.S. exporters.”

“America’s trade and investment policy should not be a partisan issue. The BRT is hopeful that the bipartisan agreement reached this week will spur further progress towards opening markets for American goods and services.”

Business Roundtable (BRT) is an association of chief executive officers of leading U.S. companies with over $6 trillion in annual revenues and more than 14 million employees. BRT member companies comprise nearly a third of the total value of the U.S. stock market and invest more than $150 billion annually in research and development – nearly half of all private U.S. R&D spending. Our companies pay $163 billion in dividends to shareholders and generate an estimated $420 billion in sales for small and medium-sized businesses annually.

BRT companies give nearly $9 billion a year in combined charitable contributions.
