SOUTHLAKE, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Average airfare over the Thanksgiving holiday is six percent higher than last year, but Travelocity travel experts found flight costs change dramatically based on travel days, meaning those travelers willing to be flexible are likely to save. Average domestic airfare is a whopping $213 cheaper on the least expensive travel days compared to the most expensive days.
“Flexibility of travel dates is a surefire way to save on airfare all year round, but it’s particularly important during peak travel periods like Thanksgiving. Limited seats and increased demand mean higher prices. Travelers willing to fly on off-peak dates can save hundreds of dollars on airfare,” said Genevieve Shaw Brown, Travelocity’s editorial director. Travelocity’s Flexible Date Search allows travelers to easily shop for fares within one to three days of their ideal departure and return dates and find cheap flights.
Travelers who choose a Monday, November 21 departure and a Sunday, November 27 return will pay on average $213 more than a traveler who chooses a Thursday, November 24 departure and a Friday, November 25 return. Realizing this combination may not be realistic for many travelers, they should instead consider a Thursday departure and a Saturday, November 26 return (on average, only $43 more) or a Wednesday, November 23, departure and a Friday, November 25 return (on average, only $31 more). In general, avoiding a Sunday return and instead opting to return on Friday or Tuesday will yield savings.
ADDITIONAL THANKSGIVING DATA
Average domestic airfare over Thanksgiving is $376 (inclusive of tax), about four percent higher than Thanksgiving 2010. Domestic hotel rates average $114 per night (inclusive of tax), a four percent decrease year-over-year.
