Broadband Excellence Celebrated at 2011 InfoVision Awards

PARIS--()--The world leaders in broadband technology and services were celebrated tonight as the winners of the Broadband InfoVision Awards 2011 were presented.

Huawei were the big winners of the night going home with three awards, while Vietnam Posts & Telecommunications Group secured the Changing Lives Award for its rural broadband project - Broadband Garden. Other winners included ZTE Corporation, YTL Communications, ASSIA, Alcatel-Lucent, PCCW Media and Freescale.

The Broadband InfoVision Awards have long been established as the industry’s most prestigious recognition of excellence in the broadband marketplace. For the second year running, the Gala Dinner Awards ceremony was held tonight aboard the Bateau Diamant on the river Seine in Paris.

Vietnam Posts & Telecommunications Group

Vietnam Posts & Telecommunications Group (VNPT) secured the Changing Lives Award for its “Broadband Garden” project, which seeks to bring broadband services to the country's rural areas, where 70% of the population live. The company has committed US$10m worth of investment to the project, and particularly hopes to give young people in rural areas the chance to use broadband services to access education, networking and other information services.

The Broadband InfoVision Awards are judged by a panel of influential C-level professionals from some of the world’s leading operators, including China Telecom, Korea Telecom, Deutsche Telekom Group and Etisalat.

Gavin Whitechurch, director of the Broadband World Forum, commented: “Each year the standard of entries never fails to impress and this year the judges had a truly global shortlist to work through from all areas of the broadband community.”

The Broadband InfoVision Gala Dinner Awards ceremony took place last night on the evening of day one of the 2011 Broadband World Forum. The three day event, being held at the CNIT in Paris, features more than 300 leading industry speakers including Kevin Lo, General Manager at Google, Olivier Baujard, Chief Technology Officer at Deutsche Telekom Group, Malcolm Turnbull, Australia’s Shadow Minister for Broadband and Communications and Dan Taylor, Director of Innovation, British Gas Smart Homes.

Last week it was announced that the Broadband World Forum would move to a larger venue in Amsterdam in 2012 to better support the significantly growing delegate and speaker demand.

Gavin added: “Congratulations to all our winners tonight. The range of companies and service areas represented highlights perfectly how technology in the broadband industry is developing and growing so rapidly. I’m already looking forward to next year’s event at our new venue at the RAI Amsterdam.”

In November of last year, Malaysia’s YTL Communications launched its advanced, nationwide and convergent 4G network. The company achieved a nationwide footprint at launch covering more than 65 per cent of the Malaysian population, using an internet-compatible open platform to enable rapid and continuous innovation, and a cutting edge architecture that brings together mobile broadband, mobile telephony (voice and SMS) and cloud-based services.

The network is estimated to be 3-5 times faster than previous generation 3G networks, and enables users to access the network through a ‘Yes ID’ rather than a sim card. Multiple devices are able to log on to the network using the same Yes ID, which has a Malaysian mobile number associated with it, thus enabling calls and text messages to be routed concurrently to all devices signed in using the same ID.

US firm ASSIA has been awarded for its DSL Expresse software, which optimises the operating parameters for each DSL line and provides detailed line-level and network-level diagnostics for both the copper plant and DSL service. The solution can scale to over 20m lines, and is compatible with ADSL1, ADSL2/2+ and VDSL DSLAMS, as well as pair-bonded deployments.

Alcatel-Lucent – lightRadio

Alcatel-Lucent's lightRadio portfolio of solutions is designed to enable mobile operators to meet customer demand for increased mobile data whilst reducing energy consumption and cutting operating costs. The portfolio is comprised of a number of solutions, including the lightRadio cube, which performs a number of roles including serving as amplifier, radio and antenna; a compression algorithm that compresses data by up to three times; a system-on-a-chip that integrates many components at the board level into the chip for a lower-power, higher-performing and space-saving device; and a software feature which up to doubles the capacity of the cell.

The lightRadio Cube offers operators a single, scalable and optimised platform for 2G, 3G and 4G, and for any frequency, and can be modified remotely via software. The lightRadio portfolio also supports a cloud-like architecture, enabling energy consumption to be cut by 50% while doubling network capacity and providing savings in operating expenses of up to 60%.

The MediaCloud On-Demand Platform promises a reliable user experience even in poor network conditions, by implementing hybrid FEC/RET technology and dynamic bit rate adaptation techniques, and also includes automatic service monitoring through Huawei’s proprietary Service Quality Monitoring (SQM) system. Also included is a range of CDN-specific features, including accelerated transmission capabilities for CDN services.

PCCW Media, part of Hong Kong telecoms giant PCCW, has been awarded for its Stargazr™ IPTV user interface, which integrates programme listings, on-demand videos, interactive services and personalisation. Stargazr™ seeks to streamline the TV experience with an easy-to-use remote control and onscreen interface.

Stargazr™ has prioritised the most frequently-used functions of a remote control, to the point where users can navigate through the entire portal using just the “OK”, “Back” and direction buttons. The UI also remembers a user’s personal preferences, provides a complete view of programme times and details, offers Favourite channels, and delivers search capabilities based on three different filters – category, genre and date.

Freescale Secure Broadband Gateway solutions speed time to market.

US firm Freescale Semiconductor has won plaudits for its Secure Broadband Gateway solutions, based around its QorIQ Communication Processor family, and designed to meet the widespread demand from both the enterprise and consumer markets for networking solutions which are secure and have lots of bandwidth yet are easy to use and always on.

The portfolio also integrates Freescale’s VortiQa commercial-grade IP Networking software to provide a range of production-ready solutions in a single box. The solutions are designed to help OEM/ODMs quickly and cost effectively create a range of secure business gateway applications, including unified threat management (UTM) appliances, WiFi Access Points, Secured routers, VoIP gateways, VPN routers, Secured switches, multi-service business gateways and IPS/IDS appliances.

ZTE Corporation - iOTN - ZTE End-to-End Seamless OTN Transport Solution

ZTE's End-to-End Seamless OTN Transport Solution (iOTN) is designed to help operators build an end-to-end, seamless OTN-transport platform. The iOTN solution combines WDM transport, ROADMs, OTN switching, centralised-carrier Ethernet switching, control plane and OAM across the network into a single, converged platform.

The solution provides an end-to-end transport platform from network edge to backbone, supporting smooth upgrades from 10Gbps to 40Gbps and 100Gbps. ZTE’s 100Gbps system employs PM-QPSK with coherent detection and has been used successfully for a 1,200km demonstration for Deutsche Telekom and Telefónica.

As a result of these innovations, operators can more flexibly cope with bandwidth challenges in the ultra-broadband era, as the 200G LPU effectively optimises high-bandwidth access capabilities and reduces deployment costs.

Changing Lives Award

Vietnam Posts & Telecommunications Group

Vietnam Posts & Telecommunications Group (VNPT) has been named for the Changing Lives Award for its "Broadband Garden" project, which seeks to bring broadband services to the country's rural areas, where 70% of the population live. The company has committed US$10mn worth of investment to the project, and particularly hopes to give young people in rural areas the chance to use broadband services to access education, networking and other information services.

The project involves the delivery of broadband services to communal post offices, each of which is provided with four computers and other equipment including webcams and a printer. VNPT has also committed itself to training key people in the community and offering training sessions for the local population with these key people on designated days. So far, over 2,000 broadband-equipped centres have been created across the country and over 1mn people have been provided with basic IT skills.
