EDMONTON, Alberta--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nancy Fares is a rarity in the highest technology circles. Holding an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, an MBA and a Master’s in Science in Telecommunication, Fares has parlayed a highly successful career at Texas Instruments to become president and CEO of Micralyne, one of the world’s leading foundries of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). With a scant number of women heading technology companies—and an even smaller number working as CEO in the electronics industry—it should be no surprise that Fares was invited to join the delegation of Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, Canada, at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Women and the Economy Summit in San Francisco this week.
“I feel truly honored to join the Canadian delegation of Minister Ambrose at the APEC Women and the Economy Summit,” said Nancy Fares, CEO, Micralyne, Inc. “I have long been passionate about the role of women in technology, and I believe in the importance of encouraging women to help lead the way in the economies of the world. The Summit provides a unique opportunity to bridge the divide of national boundary, of federal government and of commercial enterprise in pursuit of the greater good.”
Fares will participate in an invitation-only high-level policy dialogue, the outcome of which will be used to help determine the closing plenary on the “Inclusion of Women as an Economic Growth Strategy.”
About APEC Women and the Economy Summit
At the invitation of the United States State Department, the Bay Area Council has worked with the White House and executive branch agencies to assemble 150 meetings to address some of the most pressing challenges on the planet, including transportation, energy, health, the environment, technology and the empowerment of women. The conversations and policy-setting negotiations are part of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, founded in 1989. The 21 countries or “economies” that will gather in San Francisco represent approximately 40 percent of the world’s population, approximately 54 percent of the global economy and about 44 percent of world trade. There will be approximately 3,000 delegates and 200 registered journalists.
Global leaders slated to attend include:
- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
- U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu
- U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius
- U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson
- Ministers representing the 21 APEC countries including China, Japan, Russia, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Vietnam and Australia
