OKLAHOMA CITY--()--Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism (MIPT) has recently launched a searchable database of terrorism victims for the public to view at www.mipt.org.

The database includes more than 4,000 cross-stitched squares bearing the names of Americans killed in acts of terrorism, and each square, serving as a memorial, can be viewed up-close. Terrorist events included in the database are the Oklahoma City bombing, incidents of September 11, 2001, as well as the bombing of the Beirut barracks. Events cover the timeframe from 1970 to 2005.

“The database is based on an actual 60’ by 25’ flag which hangs from the ceiling of MIPT’s training room,” said MIPT’s Deputy Director Tamara Pratt. “Everyone who sees it has been so moved by it we knew we had to allow public access and the best way to do that is through the internet.”

Flag Database Facts:

  • 4,000 hand-stitched squares with names and events
  • 20 symbols representing terrorism events
  • 1,300 stitchers helped to create the squares
  • Database covers events from 1970-2005

MIPT was born out of the memorialization process at the expressed desire of the survivors and family members of the 1995 Murrah Federal Building bombing as a means to be proactive against the threat of terrorism. Currently, the actual flag serves as an inspiration to law enforcement agencies coming to MIPT for training.

Kathleen Treanor lost her 4-year-old daughter, Ashley, as well as her mother and father-in-law, LaRue and Luther Treanor, in the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995.

“The flag is a symbol of the tapestry of humanity working through the impact of terrorism,” Treanor said.

Kathleen’s family members are memorialized in the flag database each with their own square.

The story of the Terrorism Memorial Flag and its founder can be found at www.mipt.org.

MIPT is a U.S. Department of Homeland Security training partner serving the nation’s 800,000 uniformed officers and law enforcement leadership. MIPT’s mission is to enhance the public safety through training, professional development and education.
