NEW YORK & MOSJǾEN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Alcoa (NYSE:AA) today announced that its Mosjøen location has been recognized as Norway’s ‘fittest company’ for 2011 in the large, private company category in an annual competition. Alcoa Mosjøen was awarded the title based on its ‘Alcoa in Shape’ program, which promotes employee health and community volunteerism.
The ‘Norway’s fittest company’ competition runs from November 2010 until May 2011, and is sponsored by Dagens Næringsliv, one of Norway’s leading finance newspapers, and Norges Bedriftsidrettsforbund, the Norwegian Confederation of Sports. A range of companies compete in five categories: medium and large businesses in the public sector; and small, medium and large businesses in the private sector. Participants are rated on various criteria, including employee involvement, physical conditioning, sports facilities and activities, and overall promotion of healthy lifestyle.
The jury report stated: “Alcoa Mosjøen is focused on physical activity and has initiated several new actions during the competition. This distinguishes them from the nearest competitors in its class. The employees of Alcoa Mosjøen have shown great capacity for creativity and innovation through continuously expanding the range of activities and generated more return on each dollar invested. Out of the 420 employees, 300 have participated in at least one activity.”
“Being named the Fittest Company in Norway is an excellent recognition for the work we have done,” says Eivind Mikalsen, Alcoa Mosjøen Plant Manager. “We are dedicated to providing our employees a safe and healthy work environment and physical exercise plays an important role in that. This award shows us that our efforts have not stayed unnoticed.”
The competition – and Alcoa as one of the winners – was featured in various newspapers as well as covered by the national Norwegian TV network.
Alcoa Mosjøen is a primary aluminum smelter and anode production facility.
