Edmodo Unveils Suite of New Features for Upcoming School Year; Transforms the Learning Experience

Enhancements Customize the Classroom for Each and Every Learner

SAN MATEO, Calif.--()--Edmodo, the free, safe and secure social learning network that helps students learn the way they live, today announced the addition of several new features, including badges, updated iPhone and Android apps and a new user interface. With these expanded features, Edmodo is poised to help even more teachers bring creative and collaborative learning instruction into their classrooms.

“The new features that we’ve recently rolled out allow teachers to customize the classroom experience online,” said Nic Borg, Edmodo Founder and CEO. “By using engaging tools like badges, the quiz builder and our mobile apps, Edmodo provides educators with unique ways to teach and give students a new way to learn.”

With 2.5 million users and growing, Edmodo actively listens to teachers to better the product, and to students to create a product that they’ll find useful. It provides a safe and easy way for teachers and students to connect, share content and access homework, grades and school notices. Edmodo bridges the gap between the way students live and the way they learn.

New interactive educational features for Edmodo include:

  • Mobile app for iPhone and Android devices – Connect with others in Edmodo simply by “bumping” phones, join groups directly from the app, and view all Edmodo content, including videos, documents, polls, etc.
  • Badges – Enable teachers to incentivize students and provide recognition for their achievements, with educator-created and personalized badges, or Edmodo-created badges
  • Quizzes – Built directly from feedback provided by Edmodo educators, the new quiz builder will enable educators to create, assign and grade assessments using their own questions or by selecting from a question bank
  • Student profiles – Get more insight into each student with profiles that allow educators to view a student’s teachers, groups, classmates and recent activity. This information is automatically generated based on their Edmodo activity, but the student can also share a little bit about themselves by selecting their learning style and career goals

Additional professional updates include:

  • New user interface – Edmodo has gotten a facelift—streamlined graphics, fonts and layout provide a more flexible and easier navigation
  • Upgraded library – The new library makes managing content more flexible and intuitive, including the ability to share multiple items with a group, view the name of the person who sent the file and preview details of an item in the library
  • Enhanced Gradebook – Updates allow users to view overall grade averages by student, add a grade not related to a specific assignment and view average score on an assignment
  • Edmodo Connections – A series of events, information and professional development opportunities for Edmodo educators around the globe, anchored by the August 10th event, EdmodoCon—a global one day summit attended by educators from 50 states and 51 countries around the world to share ways they are integrating Social Media into their classrooms.

Results of a recent study from Scholastic and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, “Primary Sources: America’s Teachers on America's Schools1,” showed 95% of public school teachers surveyed agreed digital resources such as classroom technology and web-based programs engage students in learning. 93% of respondents said digital resources such as classroom technology and web-based programs help students' academic achievement.

In the coming months, Edmodo plans to continue to roll-out new ways for teachers to engage with classrooms as well as individual students in an always-on learning environment. For more on Edmodo and their new features, visit: www.blog.edmodo.com.
