Point Loma Nazarene University Now Accepting Applications for 2011 Kyoto Prize Journalism Fellowship

Fellowship sponsors a journalist to travel to Japan Nov. 7-14 to meet the 2011 Kyoto Prize Laureates

SAN DIEGO--()--Point Loma Nazarene University is now accepting applications for its 2011 Kyoto Prize Journalism Fellowship, a program that provides an exceptional learning opportunity for journalists seeking to further their knowledge and depth of reporting in technology, science and the arts. The selected journalist will travel to Kyoto, Japan, November 7-14, 2011, where he or she will attend the 27th annual Kyoto Prize presentation ceremony, lectures and workshops. The journalist will have opportunities to meet and interview the latest laureates of the Kyoto Prize, Japan’s highest private award for global achievement.

Deadline is September 1, 2011.

The 2011 Kyoto Prize laureates are:

● In “Advanced Technology” ― Dr. John W. Cahn, 83, a materials scientist who established the landmark theory of spinodal decomposition, supporting the development of new alloy materials; now emeritus fellow at the U.S. National Institute of Standards Technology and affiliate professor at University of Washington.

● In “Basic Sciences” ― Dr. Rashid Sunyaev, 68, an astrophysicist and contributor to high-energy astronomy who proposed the theory that fluctuations in cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) may be used to explore the expanding universe. Dr. Sunyaev is a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey; director of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics; and chief scientist at the Space Research Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences.

● In “Arts and Philosophy” ― Mr. Tamasaburo Bando V, 61, an international theater performer and tate oyama, or leading Kabuki actor specializing in female roles. Tamasaburo is known as a creator of elegant beauty whose artistry crosses many genres of the performing arts.

About the Kyoto Prize

The Kyoto Prize is presented each year by Japan’s non-profit Inamori Foundation to individuals and groups worldwide who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the betterment of society.
