KAHULUI, Hawaii--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The maker of Vatican Wars (SGR Games, LLC), today confirmed that, despite protests, over 10,000 people have entered the race to become the first Virtual Pope in Vatican Wars.
“This is the first Papal election in which everyone gets a say in the outcome,” said Cheyenne Ehrlich, founder of SGR Games, LLC. “We’re excited to see it being embraced by so many people.”
On July 6th the race for the first Virtual Pope will be narrowed to 80 Virtual Cardinals. Each will then make statements about how, if at all, they would alter the Church’s position on same sex marriage, abortion, the use of birth control, the ordination of women and whether or not priests can marry. The field will then be narrowed to two finalists and a winner.
Players largely ignored cries from conservative voices, such as the National Catholic Register, America Magazine (the magazine of the Jesuits) and Lino Rulli, host of the Sirius XM radio show, The Catholic Guy, all of which discouraged people from playing the game.
“Given the number of entries we’ve gotten, it seems like no one takes these people seriously,” continued Ehrlich. “This is probably because most people recognize that the game is good for Catholicism.”
Over the last week, Vatican Wars has been featured in more than 75 articles in the US and Europe, including more than 45 in Italy.
“We’ve definitely gone viral in Italy,” finished Ehrlich. “They are talking about us in articles about the same sex marriage vote in New York and even general news about the Vatican web site that’s about to come online. It’s a movement, and the media is starting to see it as such.”
Vatican Wars is a game in which players play as Priests in the Roman Catholic Church and perform tasks based on the liturgical calendar. Leading players become Cardinals and then all players can then elect a Pope. The current leading candidate for Pope is a woman who has conservative views. Interestingly, she opposes the ordination of women.
