SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Proving the power of visionary technology research, the ACM SIGMETRICS body bestowed its unique ‘Test of Time’ award to acclaimed Internet video technology pioneer Dr. Hui Zhang, co-founder and chief scientist of Conviva, Inc., at its recent annual conference.
Published in 2000, A Case for End System Multicast has been deemed an influential paper that has had the most impact (research, methodology, application and transfer) over the intervening period. It proposed a new overlay content distribution architecture that has functionalities and intelligence implemented at end systems (hosts and servers) instead of in core routers.
“I am honored to receive this prestigious award from the ACM SIGMETRICS in recognition of research my students and I conducted over a decade ago. I would like to thank 2000 SIGMETRICS program committee for selecting our paper even though it proposed a radical idea that was very different from the prevailing thinking at the time,” said Zhang. “Our thought was that implementing multicast intelligence at servers and hosts would be the most promising approach for rapidly deploying and scaling video services on the Internet. It’s very satisfying to see the age of Internet video has arrived and our proposed architectural principle has stood the test of time.”
A panel of experts reviewed submissions and bestowed the award to the paper which Zhang worked on with two of his doctoral students at Carnegie Mellon University: Yang-hua Chu, currently with Google, and Sanjay G. Rao, an assistant professor at Purdue University. View the paper at http://esm.cs.cmu.edu/technology/papers/Sigmetrics.CaseForESM.2000.pdf
The paper led Zhang to co-found Internet video solutions provider Conviva in 2006. He is widely recognized as an established expert on Internet QoS, video streaming, network control and Internet architecture.
Since its founding, Conviva has amassed an accomplished staff of technology professionals that help it continue to drive innovation that opens business opportunities for content owners, rights holders and carriers.
Conviva has already been instrumental in helping the most prestigious content brands expand and enrich the video viewing experience for the broadest possible audiences for events that include the 2010 Winter Olympics, FIFA World Cup, this year's NCAA March Madness basketball tournament, the inauguration of President Barack Obama, and the Academy Awards.
