PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Extensis®, a division of Celartem Inc., today presents two organizations who utilize Extensis’ digital asset management (DAM) solutions to preserve cultural heritage, increase efficiencies by leveraging collections management system (CMS) metadata, and seamlessly share digital assets. The National Museum of Ireland and the Portland Art Museum will share their successes at upcoming events.
“Collection management systems are great at managing object information and metadata, but only go so far when it comes to managing the corresponding digital images,” said Edward Smith, Product Marketing Manager at Extensis. “The National Museum of Ireland and the Portland Art Museum are great examples of how DAM works with CMS to provide a comprehensive collection information solution.”
The National Museum of Ireland manages Ireland’s national collection of heritage objects, and their Photographic Department implemented Extensis Portfolio Server to create a centralized web-based repository for efficient finding and sharing of assets.
“Search results are only as accurate as the data being searched,” said Richard Weinacht, Digital Image Technician at the National Museum of Ireland. “Portfolio Server ensures efficient image retrieval by importing data from accurate sources including file metadata and collection management system exports.”
The Portland Art Museum also turned to Portfolio Server for archiving images of its extensive collection which dates back to 1892, using the product’s metadata import functions for detailed descriptions so each asset can be easily found and shared across departments.
“Not everyone at the Museum has access to our CMS,” said Maggie Hanson, Collections Information Manager at Portland Art Museum. “With Portfolio Server, anyone who needs a collections image can find it easily and download it via a secure website. Portfolio Server also enables us to embed and display rights metadata, which informs staff of appropriate usage for each image.”
By using Extensis’ leading digital asset solutions along with their existing collection management systems, both the Portland Art Museum and the National Museum of Ireland are creating dramatic increases to efficiencies and ensuring history is preserved for the decades to come.
