Research and Markets: Uruguay Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Background Report 2011

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/371746/uruguay_telecoms) has announced the addition of the "Uruguay - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Background Report" report to their offering.

Uruguay's long-distance and international telephone sectors were liberalised in February 2001, but state-owned Antel retains a monopoly over local telephony. The PSTN has been wholly digital since 1997. Following the sale of Movicom BellSouth to Telefnica, and the award of new mobile licences in May 2004 to Telefnica Mviles and Amrica Mvil, Uruguay's mobile market is divided between three competitors: Antel, Telefnica Mviles and Amrica Mvil. The Uruguayan government launched the Ceibal Plan in December 2006, becoming the first country in the world where all primary schoolchildren were given their own laptop with Internet access.

This report provides background information for the more regularly updated Uruguay - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband. As such, it does not contain statistical data, but covers historical details on the development of Uruguay's telecom market that are absent from the more up-to-date report.
