NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The New York Times Magazine will debut its redesign on Sunday, March 6, with an issue featuring new content and a new look under the direction of editor Hugo Lindgren. A preview of the newly designed magazine is available online at NYTimes.com/Magazine.
As previously announced, Times executive editor Bill Keller will write a regular column for the magazine. The magazine will also include an abundance of new features, new columnists and more regular contributions from the newsroom staff of The New York Times.
Among them, a monthly column by Economic Scene’s David Leonhardt will analyze trending data and lists, such as the most influential people on Twitter; a monthly column by FiveThirtyEight blogger Nate Silver will use statistical wizardry to game real life; a weekly food column written by Opinion columnist and former Minimalist Mark Bittman three times a month and by restaurant critic Sam Sifton once a month, will serve up their culinary passions and recipes; and the weekly column The Ethicist by City Critic’s Ariel Kaminer will solve readers’ challenges. Susan Dominus and Matt Bai are joining the magazine as staff writers.
“We welcome these outstanding Times talents and the refreshing content they will bring to the magazine,” said Hugo Lindgren, editor, The New York Times Magazine. “Their enterprising journalism, unmistakable voices and ability to connect with our readers are at the core of this redesign.”
In addition to these familiar voices, the magazine is adding new weekly columns, writers and features. These will include “You Are Here,” an illuminating take on what life is like in different places around the world; “Talk,” a one-page interview conducted by Andrew Goldman that zeroes in on newsmakers; “What They Were Thinking,” a feature of intriguing photos and a Q. & A. with the photographer; “Look,” a three-page photo essay of events and gatherings around the world — from a reality TV show audition in Los Angeles to a dune race in Dakar; and a multifaceted remaking of the letters page that will highlight all the different ways the current magazine is discussed.
Other monthly columns and features will include “Diagnosis,” a play-at-home medical column by Lisa Sanders M.D. that speaks to the hypochondriac in all of us; “Last Month on the Internet,” a feature by Edith Zimmermann that offers an amusing retrospective on some of the most talked about topics online; “Versus,” a column that compares the virtues and drawbacks of two comparable items or ideas; and “Nine of a Kind,” a quick-read graphic column on current events. “Domains,” which offers peeks into the homes and lives of celebrated figures, will run two out of every three months.
Much of the new content will be showcased in the redesign’s March 6 debut issue. The cover story, about Lori Berenson, the American citizen just released after 15 years in a Peruvian prison, was written by contributing writer and novelist Jennifer Egan. Frank Bruni, Roger Lowenstein and Paul Tough also wrote feature stories for the debut issue.
