More than 80 Percent of CIOs Say Improving Customer Experience Is Their Top Goal

Yankee Group survey finds CIOs are driven by business objectives, not technology.

BOSTON--()--Despite the hype around cool new technologies like iPads and cloud computing, Yankee Group’s 2010 US CIO Priorities FastView Survey shows CIOs and CTOs are most driven by business objectives, not the latest and greatest technologies. When asked to rate their most important corporate goals, 82 percent of the 100 CIO/CTO executives in enterprises ranging from 500 to 10,000 employees ranked improving customer experience their top strategic priority.

Other survey findings, detailed in the Yankee Group report “2010 CIO FastView Survey: CIOs Make Business the Priority,” include:

  • Video conferencing solutions are hot. More than three-quarters of respondents say video conferencing is encouraged in their organization.
  • IM and Facebook are not. Fully 60 percent of CIOs limit employee usage of external or public instant messaging and social networking tools.
  • IT and executive management collaborate on priority setting. More than three-quarters of the respondents (76 percent) say priorities are set with equal input from IT management and executive leadership.
  • Increasing employee productivity remains important. While only ranked third in terms of strategic priorities (behind improving customer experience and driving business growth), improving employee productivity is a top driver.

“Driving business growth and profitability is what keeps these executives up at night,” said Sandra Palumbo, a Yankee Group research fellow and author of the report. “Looking for the right technology and applications to improve customer relationships, the customer experience, and employee productivity and performance is much more important than whatever the media pegs as the hot technologies of the moment.”
