Mazzetti Nash Lipsey Burch joins United Nations Global Compact

World’s leading voluntary corporate citizenship initiative promotes sustainable development

SAN FRANCISCO--()--Engineering consulting firm Mazzetti Nash Lipsey Burch (M+NLB) has signed on to the United Nations Global Compact, a voluntary and worldwide corporate citizenship initiative with over 8,000 participants from 135 countries. Signatory companies agree to promote and internalize ten principles in their operations relating to supporting human rights, fostering good labor relations, protecting the environment, and working against corruption.

“We have always lived the principles expressed in the Global Compact,” said Walt Vernon, M+NLB CEO. “Our vision is to make the world a better place by creating better environments. We are honored to be able to support these ideas in this way.”

Over the last year, Vernon and other M+NLB staff have been traveling to Haiti to rebuild hospitals damaged in last year’s earthquake. Vernon also founded a non-profit, the Sextant Foundation, which will work to bring the principles of sustainable design to healthcare facilities in the developing world.

M+NLB has recently worked with the American Hospital Association to create its “Sustainability Roadmap” for U.S. healthcare organizations, and Vernon is currently authoring a pending publication of the World Health Organization that will outline potential policy initiatives for greater sustainability in the global healthcare market.

Vernon also recently became a signatory to the United Nations CEO Water Mandate, a public-private initiative designed to assist companies in the development, implementation, and disclosure of water sustainability policies and practices. Many of M+NLB’s projects incorporate energy- and water-saving design features and systems, and its environmental performance consulting arm, BLUE, works to help clients increases the performance of their buildings while reducing operating costs. The firm is also working with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories on research into lowering hospital energy consumption, helping to write the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers’ (ASHRAE’s) Advanced Energy Design Guide for large hospitals, and is collaborating on the development of ASHRAE 189.2, a proposed national green healthcare building code.

Founded in 1962, M+NLB is a full-service mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technology engineering consulting and design firm, also providing value-added commissioning, equipment planning, materials and waste reduction, and environmental performance consulting services. It has offices in San Francisco, Irvine, and Sacramento, Calif.; Portland, Ore.; Nashville, Tenn.; Denver, Colo.; Baton Rouge and New Orleans, La., and Houston, Tex.
