Bio Nebraska Announces Annual Meeting and Governor’s Bioscience Award

OMAHA, Neb.--()--Governor Dave Heineman will present the third annual Governor’s Bioscience Award at the Bio Nebraska Life Sciences Association annual meeting. The meeting will be held in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Whittier Research Center, 2200 Vine Street, in Lincoln on April 14, 2011, starting at 4:00 p.m.

The 2011 Governor’s Bioscience Award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the bioscience industry in Nebraska. Any individual who positively impacts the state’s bioscience industry through innovation, public policy, investment, business creation, or leadership is eligible for the award. The nominee is not required to be a member of Bio Nebraska. Nomination forms are available on Bio Nebraska’s website and are due by March 25, 2011.

“It is a privilege to partner with Governor Heineman in presenting this award,” stated Amy Recker, executive director for Bio Nebraska Life Sciences Association. “When the Nebraska Bioscience Roadmap was released in September, we learned of the unique strengths Nebraska has in human, animal, and plant science. This award is intended to honor a dedicated individual who contributes to these strengths. This year’s venue at the Whittier Research Center will make the event particularly memorable.”

The 2009 recipient of the Governor’s Bioscience Award was Wayne Ryan, Ph.D., of Streck. Dr. Ryan’s scientific observations and developmental efforts led to the formation of Streck in 1978. In 2010, the award was given to Lyle Middendorf of LI-COR Biosciences and John Brumbaugh, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences, at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for their collaboration to produce one of the first automated DNA sequencing instruments.

The public is invited to the meeting and award ceremony at the Whittier Research Center. Nomination forms and information on the annual meeting are available on Bio Nebraska’s website.
