KYOTO, Japan--()--OMRON Corporation (TOKYO:6645)(ADR:OMRNY) today announced plans to release on March 1, its new "FL Series" of image processing illumination devices, which utilize OMRON's proprietary ODR (Optical Double Reflection) optics technology. This newly-developed technology delivers the highest illumination efficiency in the industry, providing four times brighter illumination than conventional bullet-shape LED-based devices, superior illumination uniformity, greater ease of installation, plus accurate light emission timing control. The launch of the FL Series represents OMRON's full-scale entry into the field of image processing illumination.

Development Background

The use of image processing equipment in manufacturing is growing increasingly important with the increasing automation of manufacturing processes and the crucial importance of ensuring and improving product quality.

OMRON has a wealth of experience in meeting the demands of the image processing inspection field for faster processing, higher levels of precision, and enhanced stability. OMRON's most notable contributions to the field are ultra-high-resolution imaging devices and real color vision sensors with full-color image processing capabilities rivaling those of the human eye.

The conventional LEDs used in image processing devices have a significant problem: increasing luminance levels leads to increased heat generation causing LED deterioration. As a result, low luminance levels and heat-dissipation have been serious issues for the industry, and this translates into several on-site difficulties: operators have difficulty obtaining stable inspection results due to insufficient brightness of the captured images and the larger-sized devices required to obtain higher luminance levels have a larger footprint and require calibration.

OMRON's FL Series uses an innovative new "ODR" lighting element, which can provide extraordinarily high luminance irradiation not possible with conventional LED lamps, while also reducing the size of the illumination device.

The lighting device can be used in combination with the industry's smallest compact lighting controller that OMRON is releasing simultaneously which is approximately 1/6 the size of conventional models. This controller features a maximum 25m wiring distance from the lighting device, providing engineers with greater installation flexibility. Light emission timing can also be controlled by setting the trigger delay and emission time.

Main Features

1. Super-Bright ODR Illumination Technology

OMRON's research into efficient light emission technologies led to the development of the unique "ODR structure" which is incorporated into a surface-mounted chip that features superior heat dissipation abilities and delivers the industry's best light efficiency. Using the technology, emitted light can be directed efficiently toward the inspection target thus delivering illumination that, at 100,000 lux (equivalent to direct sunlight), is four times brighter than conventional bullet-shape LED-based devices.

The brightness made possible by the ODR illumination technology provides an outstanding advantage: the highly compact inspection system can capture clear images of products such as electronic components or food moving on high-speed lines, greatly improving inspection stability without the need to reduce shutter speeds.

2. Large Uniform Illumination Area

Another critical factor for stable imaging is illumination uniformity. The FL series provides a 1.5 times larger uniform illumination field than conventional devices. The work distance (the distance between the light and the target) can also be set at up to twice that of conventional devices meaning that the device can be installed at a greater distance from the inspection target if necessary.

3. Industry's Smallest Lighting Controller

The compact palm-size controller facilitates convenient installation in small spaces between for example, other control units and cables, etc. The controller can also be used together with the industry's longest lighting cable (25 m) which allows remote luminance adjustment by installing an image processing monitor beside the controller.
