Fairchild Semiconductor Displays Innovative Technologies for Power Supply and Motion Control Designs at APEC 2011

Conference papers and presentations include:PSMA Power Technology Roadmap 2011 Summary’ and ‘Switching Loss Estimation of High Voltage Power MOSFET in Power Factor’

SAN JOSE, Calif.--()--Fairchild Semiconductor, (NYSE: FCS), a leading global supplier of high performance power and mobile products, will demonstrate industry-leading technologies for power supplies and motion control applications at the 2011 Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exhibition (APEC), March 6-10, at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas, booth # 209.

At APEC 2011, Fairchild will be discussing mWSaver™ technology, which offers best-in-class power savings for power supplies with the fewest possible components. mWSaver technology can integrate these five patented technologies: off time modulation, internal JFET HV start-up, feedback impedance switch, HV discharge, and PSR constant current control; as well as burst mode operation and low operation current techniques. It is only by the unique integration of these technologies that the most stringent standby specifications can be met.

A focus for the show is the FAN302HL, a highly integrated PWM controller featuring several patented mWSaver technologies. The FAN302HL provides several features to enhance the performance of general flyback converters, including constant-current control and a proprietary topology that enables simplified circuit designs, especially important in battery charger applications. Using the FAN302HL, a charger can be implemented with few external components at a minimized cost, compared to a conventional design or a linear transformer.

By developing solutions like mWSaver technology and the FAN302HL, Fairchild enables engineers to drive innovation in their designs for maximum performance, simplified design and reduced bill of materials costs.

Other demonstrations at APEC 2011 include:

  • Solutions for AC-DC power such as the highly integrated FAN6920MR which combines Power Factor Correction (PFC) controller and quasi-resonant PWM controller.
  • DC-DC power solutions such as our Dual Cool™ packaging technology, which delivers the industry’s highest power dissipation in DC-DC applications with 60 percent greater power dissipation over standard PQFN packaged MOSFETs.
  • Lighting solutions like the FAN6300A, a PWM controller which can be used for a 20W dimmable board. This product provides several features to enhance the performance of flyback converters.
  • Motor solutions such as the FCM8201, a three-phase sinusoidal brushless DC (BLDC) motor controller.
  • Industrial solutions including our FOD8012, a full duplex, bi-directional, high-speed logic gate Optocoupler, which supports isolated communications allowing digital signals to communicate between systems without conducting ground loops or hazardous voltages.

Presentations from Fairchild experts at the conference will include the following:

Aung Tu, product line director at Fairchild, will present the Plenary Session ‘PSMA Power Technology Roadmap 2011 Summary’ on Monday, March 7, from 3:00-3:30 PM. In this session, Tu will highlight some of the technology trends that will shape power conversion products for the next two to five years, identified in the Power Technology Roadmap report, which is published every two years by The Power Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA).

SungMo Young, Staff Applications Engineer at Fairchild, will present during the Technical Session: Modeling & Control of EMI and PFC, ‘Switching Loss Elimination of High Voltage Power MOSFETS in Power Factor Correction Pre-Regulator,’ on Wednesday, March 9 from 8:30-10:10 AM in room 203B. In this session, Young will discuss switching loss of high voltage power MOSFETs in hard switching applications such as boost Power Factor Correction pre-regulator. He proposes a new simple analytical switching loss model based on electrical parameters which would allow easy comparison of switching performance between devices from different technologies.

Fairchild is committed to helping designers meet the engineering challenges through technology and process advancements that result in increased performance and functional integration as well as design support resources that minimize components while reducing engineering time.
