WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. & SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Misys Open Source Solutions (“MOSS”), LLC, a division of Misys plc (FTSE:MSY.L), the world’s first fully open source, standards based health information exchange solutions provider has developed a solution with Apixio Inc. to solve a major problem facing healthcare providers who use HIEs today.
With the increased adoption of Electronic Health & Medical Records Systems (EHR/EMR), HIEs will be aggregating ever-increasing numbers of documents. This is a good and a bad problem to have; good because having electronic patient records immediately available improves patient care; bad because if there are many individual reports, where does the provider look to answer a specific question? Reviewing volumes of Clinical Summary Documents for a given patient is time consuming, ineffective and may lead to medical errors. Working with Apixio, MOSS has solved the clinical data search problem using sophisticated data parsing and vocabulary normalization techniques that make it possible for a provider to search for and filter documents for an identified patient, simply by typing in medical terms, acronyms or key words. The document filter returns only those documents that meet the search criteria – all with the click of a button. The provider-friendly search terms and associated concepts are highlighted, in the context of the document, so the provider doesn’t have to hunt for an answer and no meaning is ever lost. For example, if a patient presents to the ED with chest pain in the middle of the night and the EKG demonstrates some ambiguous findings, it would be beneficial for the doctor to have more cardiac history on the patient. Assuming there are other cardiac-related reports in the HIE community, it would be possible for the ED doctor to input “Chest Pain” into the embedded search tool, powered by Apixio, and have the MOSS Solution retrieve full CCD summary reports with relevant lab results, such as CKMB and Amylase, relevant diagnostic results, such as EKG and CT angiogram, and all concepts related to chest pain, including “chest pressure” and “chest discomfort”, highlighted throughout the relevant filtered documents.
Tim Elwell, VP of MOSS, comments, “We have solved the problem of finding the ‘needle in the haystack’. In this case the ‘needle’ is the information the healthcare provider is interested in reviewing and the ‘haystack’ is the collection of patient records that has been aggregated by the HIE. Providers will now be able to quickly and painlessly find the information they need with the assistance of the Misys Connect ™ Portal powered by the Apixio Embedded Search solution. This is an important advance for HIEs as it further moves the industry closer to its goal of creating a more efficient, higher quality and more effective healthcare delivery system through the creation of reusable tools and services as stated in the ONC’s Standards and Interoperability (S&I) Framework objectives.” MOSS is happy to team with Apixio to move the industry closer to the ONC’s vision for Stage 2 Meaningful Use.
“While the industry wrestles with the implications of the PCAST Report calling for creation of a new exchange language, Apixio with MOSS has taken the lead and developed search and semantic interoperability for multi-source clinical information exchanged via standard data formats such as CCDs. In doing so, we have demonstrated how standardized documents may be combined, and reconciled, and their relevant contents instantly presented, in context, back to the provider to answer specific clinical questions” says Shawn Dastmalchi, CEO of Apixio. “Our combined solution brings the familiar web-like search bar to medical software.”
MOSS and Apixio will be providing demonstrations of this technology at HIMSS Booths 2489 and 2481.
