InterDigital and Cinterion Demonstrate Machine-to-Machine Collaboration During Mobile World Congress 2011

Technology and System Architecture Provides Standardized End-to-end Service Capabilities for Seamlessly Integrating M2M Devices with Cellular Networks

Mobile World Congress 2011

BARCELONA--()--InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ: IDCC) today unveiled the demonstration of its next-generation M2M solution collaboration with Cinterion, the global leader in cellular machine-to-machine (M2M) communication modules, during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain. The technology and system architecture provides standardized end-to-end service capabilities for seamlessly integrating M2M devices with cellular networks, providing network operators the ability to remotely manage and control M2M devices and to offer M2M network services to third parties. This architecture is being standardized in the ETSI Technical Committee on M2M. Both InterDigital® and Cinterion have been active in the ETSI group from the outset and have made contributions towards defining the system architecture, functionality and procedures.

Cellular operators have been grappling with how to incorporate the potential of M2M communications in a technically efficient and profitable manner. Today, M2M traffic flows transparently through the operator’s network, making it difficult for the operator to monetize M2M. Furthermore, domain-specific access networks are required to connect a defined set of M2M devices to third-party M2M service provider systems.

InterDigital’s solution interconnects cellular and non-cellular (e.g., WPAN, WLAN) networks seamlessly, allowing a wide variety of M2M devices to communicate by leveraging the cellular network. This M2M architecture will enable a broad range of M2M use cases in vertical markets – such as healthcare, transportation and security – by using the cellular network to remotely manage and control cellular and non-cellular M2M devices. The architecture also enables the creation of standardized service platforms and APIs, providing a much needed and attractive way for the cellular operator to enable and capitalize on the boom in wireless M2M deployments.

“Cinterion is thrilled to work with InterDigital and the ETSI Technical Committee to lead the M2M marketplace toward pioneering technology and drive standardization protocols that are shaping the industry and motivating cooperation and evolution across the wireless industry,” said Axel Hansman, Vice President, Strategy and Marketing Communication at Cinterion. “Once again, InterDigital has strengthened its reputation for forming partnerships and introducing technology that is shaping the future of the wireless industry.”

The MWC demonstration illustrates a scalable, efficient architecture that includes two new components that optimize today’s wireless networks. The demo features Cinterion’s award-winning Java-programmable M2M products, an essential component of the end-to-end M2M demo solution. Cinterion’s TC65 Terminal incorporates InterDigital’s M2M gateway software and offers the flexible interconnection of multiple nodes.

“We applaud Cinterion for their leadership in being the first to integrate the next-generation M2M gateway technology into their products,” said James J. Nolan, Executive Vice President, Research and Development, InterDigital. “Given Cinterion’s significant presence as the worldwide leading supplier of cellular M2M platforms, this represents a key step forward toward driving the solution into the expanding M2M market.”

InterDigital’s advanced R&D efforts in M2M communications are integral to the company’s vision of tomorrow’s “Network of Networks.” This envisions the seamless integration of advanced cellular systems with multiple communications networks, which include other air interfaces that intelligently and constantly connect people and things across a myriad of wide, local and personal area networks.
