Red Lambda Reveals Initial Results of Its P2P Control Survey

75% of Respondents Report P2P Comprises Less Than 20% of Traffic

ORLANDO, Fla.--()--Red Lambda, Inc., a leading provider of massively scalable and identity-aware network security software, today announced preliminary results from its first US Higher Education Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Survey.

In December, Red Lambda conducted a survey of a number of universities and colleges across the US to understand their P2P challenges, use policies, and any currently deployed control solutions. Participants were eligible to participate in a drawing to win a incentive, including a donation to a favorite charity. The December winner, an IT practitioner from a university in Ohio, requested a donation to a local animal shelter which will be given in his name.

Some of the early results of the survey indicate that:

  • 60% indicate that bandwidth consumption is the top P2P challenge
  • 75% report P2P comprises less than 20% of traffic
  • 47% block P2P use altogether

"An interesting dichotomy uncovered by our US Higher Education P2P Survey is that over 50% of respondents identify bandwidth consumption as a top reason for controlling P2P traffic, yet they state P2P traffic only comprises 20% of their bandwidth," states Jeff Barker, Vice President of Global Marketing at Red Lambda. "Given the positive response to the insights uncovered by our first survey, we are expanding it to include more details on the cost associated with P2P control and compliance."

All respondents will be eligible to win a donation to the charity of their choice and will receive the results of the survey.

The expanded survey can be accessed at http://www.redlambda.com/survey.php.
