MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The stories of King George VI of England and the man who founded Facebook are set to dominate the Golden Globe Awards this weekend, according to a leading online sportsbook.
The head to head battle between The Social Network and The Kings Speech for Best Picture, Drama, at the Golden Globes is the one that’s captured the imagination of bettors of entertainment odds with Sports Interaction, the first online sportsbook licensed and regulated in North America.
The Golden Globes differ from the Oscars in making a distinction between movies that are dramas and movies that are comedies or musicals, but it’s not making a big difference to bettors.
“Our bettors are only interested in the drama category for Best Picture,” according to Frank Doyle, a spokesman for Sports Interaction. “The comedy/musical category is remarkably weak this year. Burlesque is nominated. What greater sign of the apocalypse do you need?”
The betting is close between The Social Network and The King’s Speech, with The Social Network favorite, a position Doyle believes could be reversed at the Oscars.
“The King’s Speech is particularly suited to the Oscars, and it’s beautifully made,” says Doyle. “But the Hollywood foreign press mightn’t be as susceptible to stories about British Royals as the Academy and that could see The Social Network sneak it on Sunday.”
The field is filled out by the science fiction movie Inception, the biopic The Fighter and the art house movie Black Swan, but Doyle considers these unlikely winners. “The Golden Globe is either the Social Network’s or The King’s Speech’s to lose,” says Doyle. “But then the loser can go double or quits at the Oscars.”
