HONG KONG & MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is excited to announce its upcoming cultural showcase at Art Basel Miami Beach 2024, taking place from December 6-8, at the Miami Beach Convention Center. This marks the second chapter of HKTB’s pioneering three-year partnership with Art Basel, following a successful debut at Art Basel Paris in October.
“Hong Kong is a destination at the epicenter of art and culture,” says Dane Cheng, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board. “Collaborating with Art Basel provides a platform to showcase Hong Kong’s distinctive cultural experiences with a global audience. The Cha Chaan Teng at Art Basel Miami Beach exemplifies our commitment to celebrating the city’s blend of East and West, creating an experience that inspires and offers a sneak peek at Art Basel Hong Kong. We are eager to welcome the art world with open arms to Hong Kong in March.”
Angelle Siyang-Le, Director of Art Basel Hong Kong, said: “Our partnership with the HKTB encapsulates the unique synergy that emerges from a shared love for art, cuisine, and community. Following the successful Paris activation, which featured a Cha Chaan Teng illuminated by Trevor Yeung’s light installation and a panel on ‘Cultural Crossroads’ moderated by Doryun Chong, we are excited to showcase Mak2’s innovative video work at the Cha Chaan Teng in Art Basel Miami Beach. This piece invites viewers into a virtual art fair inspired by her 'Home Sweet Home' series, blurring the lines between reality and the digital realm. Together, we are inviting visitors to immerse themselves in Hong Kong’s vibrant spirit right here in Miami Beach.”
A Journey Through Hong Kong’s Cha Chaan Teng Culture
The Hong Kong-style café invites visitors to immerse themselves in Hong Kong’s traditional café culture by stepping into one of Hong Kong’s iconic Cha Chaan Tengs artfully recreated in the heart of Miami. These bustling diners are rooted in the city’s mid-20th-century culture, known for their eclectic menus that blend East-meets-West flavors. This space will offer a sensory journey through Hong Kong’s cultural fabric. Visitors will indulge their tastebuds with classic treats such as pineapple buns, egg tarts, and milk tea, all set against an immersive backdrop of nostalgic design elements, such as patterned floor tiles and Hong Kong-style décor.
Artistry Infused with Cultural Identity
Celebrated Hong Kong multi-media artist Mak2 will debut an exclusive art installation “Sweet Home Invasion” within the space, seamlessly integrating physical and digital elements in her signature style. Drawing inspiration from the energy and diversity of Hong Kong’s urban landscape, the specially commissioned piece will transform the eye-catching space into a dynamic showcase, where tradition meets modernity, creating an all-encompassing experience that reflects Hong Kong’s captivating spirit.
“My creative practice stems from my observations of the world around me and attempts to reconstruct ideas through means of humor and critical thinking,” said Mak2. “I often position my works in the context of my home—Hong Kong, as it is the place that I experience first-hand, every day. It was a pleasure to create this work for the Hong Kong Tourism Board x Art Basel Cha Chaan Teng collaboration at Miami Beach. Art to me is fundamentally a way of revealing the truth, and I hope to show viewers a glimpse of my experience through this new work.”
A Platform for Global Cultural Exchange
HKTB’s showcase at Art Basel Miami Beach is a continuation of its ongoing partnership with Art Basel and underscores Hong Kong’s commitment to presenting the city as a leading center for art and culture. Art lovers and cultural enthusiasts from around the world are invited to rediscover Hong Kong as a city that thrives at the intersection of heritage and modernity.
