CalMatters Exposes Lie-Filled Ads Attacking Rent Control (Yes on 33)

Fact check shows California Apartment Association flooding airwaves and mailboxes with multiple false claims about Proposition 33

LOS ANGELES--()--With less than three weeks until election day, CalMatters has fact-checked the California Apartment Association’s (CAA) ads about Proposition 33 and points out CAA is lying when it says Prop 33 will repeal more than 100 state housing laws and when it claims Prop 33 will repeal the strongest rent control law in the nation. Greedy corporate landlords also are deceiving voters when they say rent control will make the housing crisis worse and flat out lying when they claim Prop 33 will eliminate protections for seniors and voters.

“We are glad CalMatters is doing real journalism and calling out the billionaire corporate landlords’ lies,” said Susie Shannon, Yes on 33 campaign manager. “More news organizations should inform Californians that the flood of ads they’re seeing on TV, online, and in their mailboxes attacking Prop 33 are lies and cannot be trusted.”

Corporate landlords want to stop Prop 33 so they can continue to charge sky-high rents, year after year, and rake in billions in revenue off hard-working California tenants.

Proposition 33, sponsored by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and now endorsed by more than 100 elected and formerly elected officials in California as well as more than 70 labor, senior, veteran, healthcare, and tenant groups, is just 23 words: "The state may not limit the right of any city, county, or city and county to maintain, enact or expand residential rent control.”
