DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The "Paint Industry in South Africa 2023" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.
The paint industry is dominated by internationally-owned companies, the two largest being Amsterdam-based Dulux manufacturer AkzoNobel and Japanese company Kansai Plascon Africa, which manufactures Plascon. Decorative/architectural paints, used for decorative purposes on roofs, floors, walls, facades and doors, account for 78% coatings sales. Industrial/performance and automotive coatings, applied largely for protection, make up the balance. Manufacturers have been severely affected by power cuts and have had to spend on backup systems.
New Development
Titanium dioxide, a vital raw material to produce paints, varnishes and driers, is currently imported since the last local producer of the chemical shut down in 2016. A new R4.2bn plant is being built by chemical manufacturer Nyanza Light Metals at Richards Bay. In January 2023, SARS announced a rebate on titanium dioxide imported for the manufacture of paint, to apply until 2025 by which time it expected there will be sufficient local production.
Trends and Issues
There has been weak demand in the decorative/architectural paint and coatings segment due to lower spending on DIY, but the automotive coatings segment is doing well as vehicle production has increased. There is growing demand for sustainable and environmentally-friendly paints and coatings.
Loadshedding and unreliable power supply, delays at ports affecting the supply of imported raw materials and increasing operating costs are some of the key challenges in the industry.
